How to read INCI on trichology cosmetics

INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) is the EU-mandated naming system for cosmetic ingredients. Every cosmetic must display it on the packaging — and it's the one thing actually worth reading when choosing a product.

Order = importance

INCI ingredients are listed from the highest to the lowest concentration. The higher on the list, the more of it in the formula.

The 1% threshold

Down to 1%, ingredients must be listed in descending order. Below 1% they may appear in any order.

Look for the actives

If an active ingredient sits very far down the list, it is probably present only in a small amount.

Watch out for detergents

With a sensitive scalp, be careful with harsh detergents such as SLS and SLES — they can damage the skin's hydrolipid barrier.

Check the silicones

Dimethicone or Cyclomethicone can smooth the hair, but they are not always desirable in scalp care.

Don't trust only the front of the pack

Marketing claims are not enough. Always read the product's full INCI before you buy.

The full composition of our serum and mask is on each product page.
